Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: Part 2 (The Solution)

The Solution isn't more time

We all feel it—the relentless pressure of time. Our calendars overflow, our to-do lists never end, and we dream of just a few extra hours in the day. But here's the truth: more time isn't the solution.

If we had more hours, we'd just cram them with more commitments, leaving us even more exhausted and burned out. The real solution? Slow down. Simplify. Recenter life around what truly matters.

Embracing our limitations

We live in a culture obsessed with potential—"be your best self," "reach for the stars." While that's inspiring, we often forget a crucial truth: we are not God. We have limitations.

Our bodies can only be in one place at a time.
Our minds can only know in part.
Our giftings differ, and comparison steals joy.
Our emotional wiring, family background, socioeconomic status, education, and even the season of life we're in—all set boundaries.

And then there's time. Whether we live 18 years or 108, life is fleeting. These limitations aren't bad; they're where we discover God's will for our lives. Accepting them frees us from the tyranny of "doing it all."

Life is a series of choices

Every "yes" requires a "no." Learning to say no—gracefully and unapologetically—is essential. Because here's the reality: most of us waste staggering amounts of time.

Consider this:

  • The average American spends 705 hours a year on social media and 2,737 hours watching TV.
  • At a reading speed of 200-400 words per minute average, you could read 200 books a year in just 417 hours.

Imagine what else we could do with those hours—pray for loved ones, read Scripture, nurture relationships. It's not about adding more time; it's about reframing what matters.

The Secret of the Easy Yoke

So what does this have to do with following Jesus? Everything.

Jesus was a rabbi—a teacher with a "yoke," a way of interpreting Scripture and living life. His yoke was unique because it was easy. He invited people into an apprenticeship:

  • Be with Jesus
  • Become like Jesus
  • Do what He would do if He were you

This isn't about escape; it's about equipment. Jesus offers a way to shoulder life's weight with grace and rest. Picture two oxen yoked together—Jesus doing the heavy lifting, setting the pace: slow, unhurried, full of love and peace.

An easy life isn't promised. But an easy yoke? That's His gift.

A rule of life

If you read the Gospels, one thing stands out: Jesus was rarely in a hurry. His life was full, but never frantic. He built margin—the space between load and limits—into His days. He withdrew to quiet places, lingered over meals, practiced Sabbath, and lived simply.

Following Jesus means adopting His lifestyle, not just admiring His life. It means rearranging our days so His rhythms become our new normal. Relationships take time. If we want love, joy, and peace to be our default settings, we have to make room.

Are you ready?

Over the next four months, we'll explore four practices to help you unhurry your life. But for now, ask yourself:

  • What would it look like to slow down?
  • What trivial things could you trade for what truly matters?
  • Are you ready to take up Jesus' easy yoke and find rest for your soul?
